The Lemon Show: Five Flavors Edition

/

The Hairy Lemon

For this second group show organized by greyeggg at The Hairy Lemon in Alphabet City, the theme was the five original Lifesaver flavors: lime, lemon, orange, cherry, and pineapple. Each piece needed to be 5 x 5 inches.

I employed a technique I’d used for a number of paintings around that time, laying down bold lines with waterproof Higgins Black Magic ink, then adding brightly psychedelic, pointillist watercolor over the top. The ink created interesting resist effects.

Sadly, I used Dr. Ph. Martin’s Radiant Concentrated watercolors for this (I’d gotten what I thought was a great deal when an art-supply store was closing), and the pigments absolutely were not lightfast. Thankfully I documented my work well at the time, and later was able to make prints of these images, because the originals have since faded to tints of light yellow, blue, and green.
